Battery Problem? Pixel 6a Gets Must-Install Update Soon
Google will push an Android 16 update to Pixel 6a phones from July 8 to fix overheating risks. Eligible users get free battery replacement or credit.

Google has announced that a compulsory Android 16 update will begin rolling out to all Pixel 6a users starting July 8. The update is intended to address a potential battery overheating issue that could pose safety risks.
According to Google’s updated Pixel support documentation, the firmware will include a new battery management system designed for Pixel 6a units that have reached at least 400 charge cycles. Devices under this threshold will not be affected until they cross that limit. Users will be notified at 375 cycles that the feature will soon be enabled automatically.
The update aims to slow battery charging and reduce backup time to prevent overheating in affected units.
Reports of battery swelling in Pixel 6a units, including one confirmed case where a device caught fire, prompted Google's intervention. PhoneArena, on May 18, highlighted multiple instances of battery expansion in the model. Swollen batteries are typically a precursor to more serious failures, including fire hazards and chemical leaks.
In response, Google confirmed on its support page that certain Pixel 6a units identified as "impacted devices" will receive this critical update to minimize thermal risks.
Only users with impacted Pixel 6a units that have surpassed 400 battery cycles will experience the new limitations. Those unsure whether their device qualifies can visit the Pixel support page to verify their status.
To assist affected users, Google is offering three remedies:
1. Free Battery Replacement: Eligible users may request a battery replacement at no cost, available via walk-in or mail-in repair services.
2. Cash Compensation: Users not eligible for the battery replacement may receive a one-time cash settlement.
3. Hardware Discount Credit: As an alternative, users can opt for store credit toward another Pixel device or accessory through the Google Store.
Indian users eligible for the free battery service can access this option beginning July 21, 2025. The support program will remain open until July 8, 2026, after which no further assistance under this policy will be offered.
